Training for Neonatology and Ultrasound
From 23rd to 27th October 2023, Dr. Christian Schmidt, paediatric cardiologist, and his wife Irene Schmidt - a nurse, specialized on neonatology - from the German Society of Tropical Pediatrics and International Child Health (GTP) visited our hospital. They have offered training on neonatal intensive care, emergency ultrasound and basic echocardiography.
Doctors and nurses of our own pediatric and NICU departments as well as from nearby hospitals within Mtwara and Lindi regions have participated in the training.
In the morning hours, doctors and nurses were trained together on basics of neonatology like neonatal resuscitation, oxygen therapy (CPAP), feeding and fluid management. After a short tea break, the nurses received practical training on NICU care, while the doctors continued with training on ultrasound and echocardiography. The utilization of point of care ultrasound and echocardiography enables the doctors to identify emergencies and congenital heart diseases at the earliest stage. Some of the babies can be referred for cardiac operation at Muhimbili National Hospital, others can be managed with conservative treatment.
Our Senior Experts have provided this excellent training free of charge for the benefit of the population of the Southern Zone of Tanzania.
