Eye Care Outreach Camp 2024

From July 1st to 4th 2024, an ophthalmologist from Germany (Dr Raimund Balmes) organized an eye camp at Newala District Hospital – 70 km from Ndanda – in cooperation with our ophthalmology department in Ndanda. The team also included another German ophthalmologist (Dr. Gesine Kiefer), two local ophthalmologists, 6 nurses, and 2 opticians.
The aim was to give poor patients in the villages access to qualified ophthalmologic treatment.

A total of 622 patients were examined. 80 operations were performed, 75 of them for patients with cataracts and 5 for patients with pterygium.  The visual acuity of 267 patients was measured (refraction). 67 patients received reading glasses and 100 patients sunglasses. The cataract operations allowed patients with impaired vision and patients who were already completely blind to regain full sight. At the same time, our employees were trained on early detection and treatment of common eye diseases. The project was financed by the Eyesight Foundation (Stiftung Augenlicht). All treatments were offered free of charge to the patients
