Ndanda

Peritoneal Dialysis

From October, 15th 2018 until October, 19th, nephrologist Dr. Kajiru Kilonzo together with dialysis nurse Mrs. Willina Sarina were visiting Ndanda with the aim of initiating Peritoneal Dialysis (PD).

Parallel to intensive training sessions for our doctors and nurses, three patients were initiated with peritoneal dialysis. All treatments were offered free of charge for these patients.
It was the first time that dialysis was performed in the South of Tanzania!

Our very first patient Dominik, now 22 years old, managed to get kidney transplantation at Muhimbili National Hospital, Dar Es Salaam in July 2018. Now he is doing fine and he has started vocational training in the taylor´s workshop of Ndanda Abbey.

Meanwhile, peritoneal dialysis is available in our facility for cash patients, the prices are subsidised by the hospital.
So far, 7 patients have been treated with PD (June 2020).

In December 2018 we started Peritoneal Dialysis for another patient.
PD was life saving for all 4 patients who were included into the programme.

However, for reasons not related to PD, three of these patients have died meanwhile.

But our very first patient Dominik, 21 years old, managed to get kidney transplantation at MNH/Dar Es Salaam in July 2018. He received support from our social funds.

Now he is doing well.

This is a great achievement for the hospital as well as for the Southern Zone of Tanzania!
